This conceptual Tangible Interaction prototype was developed during the Interaction Modes module at Universitat Pompeu Fabra. The system was devised to control ambient light, mood lights, and music by placing marbles and “stones” inside the sandbox. The concept would ask the user to play with the random position and distance of the marbles and the stones (as the three control receptors) and draw in the sand the time they’d like to use the generated setting.
I imagined a future in which we want to set programs for our smart home, we need a controller that cannot be considered out of the scene, and is integrated into the room. I designed (conceptually) a sandbox similar to a zen garden in which 3 stones placed inside symbolize Light, Visuals, and Music. By placing randomly colored marbles, the distance from each marble to the main stones would set a controlled random setting for all the systems. Then by taking sand and placing it into a plate we can “draw” and set the time we want it to last.
The project aimed at exploring the limits of randomness with tangibles.
